ABOUT BOB ROMANO

Bob Romano and his wife, Trish, have owned a cabin in western Maine’s Rangeley Lakes Region for nearly forty years. Sometimes referred to as "The Land of Fishing Legends," it is a region of the country where moose outnumber the residents and native brook trout share the rivers with landlocked salmon.

As entertaining as he is informative, Bob will cover where and when to fish, what flies to cast, and a few proven techniques. With over 100 photos in his program, Bob will describe how western Maine remains a region within driving distance where a sixteen-inch native brook trout is not unusual and an angler can still cast a fly, with only moose, beaver, and otter for company.

Bob’s books will be available for sale after the program. His most recent novel, RETURN TO RANGELEY, was released in January 2025. Published in 2023, RIVER FLOWERS, is his collection of short stories about wild fish, the places they’re found, and the people who seek them out.

His essays and short stories have appeared in various anthologies, including Christmas in the Wild, Fresh Fiction for Fresh Water Fishing, and Wildbranch: An Anthology of Nature, Environmental, and Place-Based Writing.

His articles have also appeared in The Drake and Fly Culture Magazines. He is also a frequent contributor to Midcurrent, the online fly-fishing magazine as well as Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors Magazine and The Journal, a literary magazine serving eastern Pennsylvania and northwest New Jersey. Bob also writes a monthly column for Northwoods Sporting Journal while doing his best to keep up with his blog http://forgottentrout.wordpress.com

Chapter Meeting with Guide/Musician Darren Rist - Thursday, Sept. 11, 2025, at 7:30pm

Chapter Members,

Join us on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2025, for our Chapter meeting with fly fishing guide/musician Darren Rist at the Whippany American Legion 13 Legion Place, Whippany, NJ.

The Catskills and Upper Delaware are loaded with fly fishing guides. Darren Rist is one of the best. Chapter members, including myself, have fished with Darren and had tremendous success. Darren's methods and fish spotting ability are deadly for Upper Delaware trout. Not only is Darren a great guide, he is also an incredibly talented musician. Darren and his band, Parachute Adams, play at the River Run Restaurant at the West Branch Angler Resort on Thursday nights during the spring performing classic American rock and roll. Catch Darren and Parachute Adams on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2025, at Golden Stone Outfitters Fourth Annual Open House.

Hope to see you at our meeting on Thursday, Sept. 11.

September Fly of the Month- the Sparkle Dun

The Sparkle Dun is an outstandingly simple adult mayfly pattern developed by Craig Mathews of West Yellowstone, Montana. The pattern incorporates only three materials and all of them are cheap and commonly available. The Sparkle Dun was one of the first patterns to incorporate a trailing shuck. The Z-Lon shuck imitates the empty nymphal husk hanging from the back of the emerging dun and is a definite trigger for selective fish. This is a simple but highly effective fly that can be accomplished by even beginning tyers. Gather up your materials, sit down and crank out a batch of PMD Sparkle Duns. Then go on to tie them on Baetis colors and even Red Quills. The pattern will nicely imitate any mayfly just by changing the colors of the components. Some believe that this is the “greatest fly ever”!

Tie up 6 and bring them to the September Chapter Meeting. There will be two raffles.
