March Fly of the Month-Lafontaine Sparkle Caddis Pupa

Cris Giordano March 6, 2024

Gary LaFontaine’s Sparkle Pupa has been one of the most successful caddis pupa imitations ever produced since its inception in the 70’s.  The Antron body material creates an air pocket that mimics the gaseous bubble created by pupating caddis before they emerge, and this fly can be fished in the surface film or dead drifted on the bottom with equal effectiveness.

Tie up six and bring them to the March 14 chapter meeting. There will be two raffles!

Fly Tying Tuesday, February 20 with EP Trigger Point Fibers

Cris Giordano February 10, 2024

A few years ago I attended a fly tying event at the Califon Firehouse and met fly tier “Uncle Bob” Hopken. He was tying some interesting dry flies with EP Trigger Point Fibers. He claimed that they caught lots of fish and were quick to tie. I then went across the street and purchased a few packs of Trigger Point Fibers at Shannons. Uncle Bob was right. They’re easy and quick to tie. I’ve caught lots of trout using them. They might even work better than traditional flies made with natural materials.

Unlike natural materials, Trigger Point EP Fibers do not absorb any water. On the first backcast, water snaps right out and the fly is bone dry by the time it hits the water. Nothing sticks to it. On the Delaware in the summer, you have a ton of algae and it can be a nightmare constantly cleaning your fly. With this material, you don’t have to worry about that. It’s like Teflon.

Join us for the next fly tying session at the Parsippany Library, 449 Halsey Rd, Parsippany, on Tuesday evening, February 20 from 6:45 to 8:45. We will be tying dry flies using EP Trigger Point Fibers. This is an excellent opportunity to become familiar with this type of fly tying.

Attendees should bring their tools, plus the following threads: 8/0 grey or tan, UTC 70 olive, 6/0 or 8/0 pale yellow, and brown or black. All other materials will be provided.

We will attempt the following 5 flies: Caddis, Blue Wing Olive Emerger, Hendrickson Split Wing, Sulphur Usual, and Rusty Spinner

It’s fun, and it’s FREE!! All are welcome. Please let us know if you can make it. Email htuprez@gmail.com

February Fly of the Month- Parachute Adams

Cris Giordano February 1, 2024

The Parachute Adams is one of the most famous and, might I add, effective, dry fly patterns known to anglers. Moreover, between its versatility, reliability, and ease of visibility on the water, it is one of the most essential fly patterns to keep stocked in your fly box.

The Parachute Adams, with its visible white wing, natural gray body, and smoke of mixed hackle looks like a lot of things in nature that trout eat. It is one of the best searching flies you can carry and is a critical fly for your minimalist list of patterns. It will catch trout on smooth and rough waters, when they are selective and when they are not.

Tie up six Parachute Adams and bring them to the February chapter meeting. There will be two raffles.
