December 12th Meeting-Pot Luck Dinner and Auction!!!

This is the meeting you don’t want to miss. I quote from our president/auctioneer Jim Langell:

“That’s right folks! The December auction and pot luck dinner meeting is almost here. I will be bringing Jim’s famous Mac and Cheese. I’m sure Steve will have his kielbasa and kraut. The question is, what are you going to make this year? Start scanning those cook books!

Also, start going through the piles of crap you have laying about your house. We welcome books, old fishing equipment, tying supplies and equipment, tools, gently used fishing clothes and just about anything else you can think of.

Yes, we will auction off your mom’s diamond ring and your uncle Bernie’s car. If its legit, you’re willing to donate it and it ain’t broken, bring it to the meeting and we will auction it off in the name of funds for Hacklebarney.

That’s Thursday December 12th, 7:30pm at the Legion Hall. Don’t show up empty handed and remember to bring cash!”

November Fly of the Month- The Frenchie

The Frenchie is a simplified pheasant tail nymph pattern popularized by the French in competition fly fishing and one of the most popular flies used in European style nymphing techniques that have become popular here in the US. It can be tied on a number of different hooks, including jig hooks. The Frenchie is an excellent winter trout fly. It takes only a few minutes to put together with just a few materials. The Frenchie is designed with a very slim profile to minimize resistance in the water and allow the fly to sink quickly. This is why the Frenchie has no legs like the original pheasant tail nymph.

Tie up ten of your own version and bring them to the November Chapter meeting.

Fall and Winter Tactics for Trout.

Matthew Grobert is a lifelong resident of New Jersey. He has traveled the country extensively in search of trout and a better understanding of the rivers and their insects. He previously wrote the weekly NJ fly fishing column for the Star Ledger, "Beginners Corner" for the Northeastern Fly Fishing Guide, and has appeared in Fly Fisherman Magazine. Matt also authored the book Fly Fishing New Jersey Trout Streams. He is an expert fly tier and has been teaching all disciplines of fly-fishing for 25 years.

October Fly of the Month- The Pheasant Tail Nymph

While there are no secret patterns that are guaranteed to catch fish every time you are on the water, the closest thing to it would be the Pheasant Tail Nymph. This generalist nymph pattern is close enough in color to a host of invertebrate species that - when fished in a number of sizes - can be used to effectively imitate almost any mayfly or stonefly nymph in the water.
