 Rinehart Brook (Morris) - Brook Trout Restoration Project A Brook Trout restoration project was initiated on Rinehart Brook, a tributary to the Black River within Hacklebarney State Park in 2017.  Prior to the project, non-native Brown Trout had become the dominant trout species, with the native Brook Trout residing in small numbers.  The objectives of this study were: to determine if multiple depletion electrofishing could be an efficient manner to remove Brown Trout, to monitor potential rebound effects of the Brook and Brown Trout populations, to determine if natural boulder waterfalls prevent Brown Trout from recolonization, and ultimately restore Brook Trout. 

June Fly of the Month- The Royal Wulff

The adoption of the hairwing patterns that eventually became the Wulff dry fly style began in the late 1920’s in several locations. Although many angling writers credit Lee Wulff with the Royal Wulff, Q. L. Quackenbush, an early member of the Beaverkill Trout Club above Lew Beach in New York is often cited as the creator. In 1929–30 both Quackenbush and Wulff had independently modified the Royal Coachman pattern, particularly the Fanwing Royal Coachman with hair wings and tails. Both Wulff and Quackenbush made the modifications because the Fanwing Royal Coachman proved too flimsy and fragile on rough water.

KARL AND ERIK BARTON SPEAKING AT CHAPTER MEETING, THURSDAY, MAY 9TH

The topic will be about fishing with two-handed fly rods. Hacklebarney TU Chapter members, Karl and Erik Barton have been fly fishing together extensively for the last decade or more. They will be discussing all the aspects of fishing with 2 handed rods including the history of 2 handed rods, the different types of rods, which rods fit which situations, all the different lines and situations for each, all the different casting techniques, good resources for information and various gatherings that are held each year.  Pretty much everything you always wanted to know about 2 handed rods. You don’t want to miss this one!
